Go Green, Recycle Old

Focus on Energy resumes free program to recycle refrigerators and freezers. And, don't forget to consider new energy-efficient options.

Do you have an ancient second refrigerator or freezer in your basement or garage? Maybe not mid-1900s ancient but still old enough that it is time for disposal or replacement.

Now you have an environmentally responsible way to recycle it.

Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's statewide energy efficiency program, is again offering a free Appliance Recycling Program. This program was briefly discontinued but has started again in 2017. Focus offers a $35 incentive to you for recycling your old refrigerator or freezer. For more information, visit mge.com/focus-recycle.

Choose wisely

If you are in the market for a new refrigerator or freezer, look for the ENERGY STAR® label. ENERGY STAR refrigerators or freezers:

Are built with quieter high-efficiency compressors, improved insulation and more precise temperature control.
Use at least 10% to 15% less energy than the current federal standard.

Using energy efficiently saves money and reduces your environmental footprint. Working with our customers to use energy wisely is one way in which MGE is working to advance our Energy 2030 framework. Energy 2030 has a goal of reducing carbon emissions 40% from 2005 levels by 2030. If we all use less energy, we can save money and reduce emissions.

These older thermostats contain a small amount of mercury. Newer digital thermostats do not contain mercury.

Thermostat recycling

Upgrading to a new setback or smart thermostat? To help reclaim and recycle mercury in old standard thermostats, MGE offers a thermostat recycling program for customers. Bring your old thermostat to our general office at 623 Railroad St. between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. We'll make sure it is recycled appropriately.
